The estate is distributed in accordance with fixed rules called the intestacy rules. There’s a useful tool that sets out who would inherit - Intestacy - who inherits if someone dies without a will? - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
Sadly, co-habiting partners do not inherit from the estate under these rigid rules.
Step-children and friends are left out too despite how close you are.
The only way to control who inherits from your estate is by making a Will. You can choose who should benefit from your hard-earned savings instead of passing the estate to fixed family members who you may no longer have a relationship with.
